NOVEMBER 2003 UPDATE
My Miss Kansas travels continue . . . the
week of November 17 was incredibly busy. On Veterans Day Monday, I
had presentations in Southeast Kansas - two in Sedan, Kan. (just west of
Coffeyville) and one in Chetopa, Kan. (east of Coffeyville).
All of the students were very well-behaved and of course, enjoyed the
baton twirling.
Tuesday evening I was in Colwich, Kan., for
a Renwick Education Foundation Banquet. Renwick educators from
Garden Plain, Andale and Colwich are trying to create an endowment for
their schools and I was more than pleased to help out and to support their
efforts.
My Wednesday's travels took me to the
northeast corner of Kansas. My aunt and uncle, who own Van's Electric in
Fairview, Kan., hosted me for my stay in the area. My Aunt Cleo was
able to be my traveling companion for the day as I made school appearances
in Mayetta, Holton and Jackson Heights. The day kept us moving quickly
from school to school.
After my twirling performance in Mayetta, a
student commented to one of the educators, "Miss Kansas is a pretty
good baton twirler for her age." In my mind, I didn't think
twenty-two years old was too "old," but I guess that student
enjoyed the presentation.
This area of schools was very
interesting because about twenty-five percent of the students in each
school were native Americans. My audiences were very diverse which
as enjoyable to talk to.
My school tour ended Thursday in Emmett, a
small grade school of about fifty total students. I took pictures
with each class.
This week was just packed with
presentations, but I truly enjoyed myself. Each day brings a new
opportunity to enrich children's lives, and that is very rewarding.
I wish you all a very happy and safe
Thanksgiving holiday season.
