Background and Accomplishments:
Amy Lea Shaw began participating in pageants at the age of 18. She was excited to become involved, as she knew the talent she acquired while practicing piano since the age of 4 was a gift worth showcasing. She was especially interested in the opportunity to receive college scholarships. In fact, she paid for her entire college education with scholarship dollars from the Miss America Organization.
Amy was a winner of over $18,000 in scholarship monies from the Miss America Organization. Her awards and recognitions include:
• 1998: Miss Kansas Marge Savage Best Instrumentalist Award
• 1998: Top Ten Finalist at Miss Kansas
• 2000: Miss Kansas Tara Dawn Holland Community Service 3rd Place
Amy was instrumental in forming the partnership between the Miss Kansas Organization and the State of Kansas. She also helped establish primary lines of communication between the Miss Kansas Organization and “Models and Images”.
During her reign as Ms. Kansas, Amy spoke to over 250 schools and organizations on mentoring. As the spokesperson for the Kansas Children’s Service League, she also spoke to children about drug and alcohol prevention. She has been a personal consultant and mentor for many contestants competing in various pageant organizations. She worked and spoke for United Way of the Plains, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, New Friends, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Amy now lives in Wichita, Kansas. She is part of the Destination Sales team for the Greater Wichita Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. She volunteers her time and talents to many organizations and events, such as:
• Leukemia Lymphoma Society Man & Woman of the Year campaign
• Big Brothers and Big Sisters Bowl for Kids’ Sake event
• Kansas Society Association Executives
• Muscular Dystrophy Association
Amy is a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church. She likes to travel and has recently been to New York, New York, Chicago, Illinois, and Isla Mujeres, Mexico. Amy stays active and enjoys skiing, working out, running, and playing golf. She also loves to spend time with her golden retriever, Jed.
It is apparent that Amy truly enjoys pageants. She is the Executive Director for the Miss Sedgwick County pageant and continues to recruit and work with girls competing in the pageant circuits. Amy believes that the Miss America Organization is truly a self-improvement program. She encourages all young women to participate. “It is a wonderful venue to showcase your talents, speak out on issues close to your heart, improve interview skills and poise, and gain confidence” she says.
