What a beautiful day! I was able to go on a bike ride this morning, and it is perfect outside. There is sunshine, fairly clear skies, a little bit of wind, and everything is still green. It is always nice to try and get a little bit of time outdoors, whether it be running, biking, swimming, anything. The last month has required a lot of time researching, making phone calls, typing emails--basically indoors.
In the past couple of weeks I have been doing several things: preparing for the school tour that is kicking once I return from the reality show, practicing the different phases of competition for the Miss America Competition in January, keeping up with old and finding new sponsors, writing notes and letters and getting everything put in place for the reality show taping. Believe it or not, I leave on Sunday to head out to L.A. to tape the reality show.
Last night I began packing for Los Angeles. I will be away from Kansas until early October! Even though we have not been given many details, I know everyday is going to be great. I will miss everyone back here in Kansas, but it is always good to get out of your comfort-zone and try new things. The last time I was in California was when I was a freshman in high school. I was in San Fransisco, so I must say, I am thrilled to get the chance to be in L.A. this time around.

Our weather has certainly been crazy. You know, it kind of feels like we are in the mountains right now. In the morning it is chilly jacket weather and by afternoon, it is too warm for a jacket. With fall literally just around the corner, I will tell you I just cannot wait for Halloween--one of my favorite holidays! I dress up almost every year! We will see where this Halloween takes me; maybe I will end up on the spooky train ride in Pratt, Kansas.
I have had some really great feedback about music and books I have talked about on here, so I figured I would give out another name of an album/musician that I enjoy listening to...Billie Holiday. I know that everyone knows this name; however, there is an album called Lady in Satin that is just phenomenal. Billie recorded this album in 1958 and she passed away in 1959. This album has some of the most amazing vocals I have ever heard. The true beauty is that her voice is so raw. Her voice does not sound like it once did when she was younger. She instead sounds like she has gone through life and can now truly express what she feels. She sounds as she is.
Okay…I cannot resist but to give you one more album and movie to check out. The reason for this is that I have been listening to the soundtrack as I write this and I think people just really need to know about this music. The name of the movie is Amelie. Both the soundtrack and the movie are great! It is French music; and consequently, it is a French movie. Enjoy!
The real work of Miss Kansas has really started to come to life—even though it did start the night I was crowned with the press conference and the banquet the next morning. In the past month I have toured our Juvenile Justice system in Kansas, visiting two Juvenile Correctional Facilities, three Juvenile Detention Centers and seven courthouses. The development and understanding that I have done with my platform in just this month has been incredible. I have been places I never thought I would be able to go, along with meet people I would have never thought I would have the chance to meet. A couple of the highlights from the past month would have to be speaking to the Kansas Advisory Group and the girls in the Beloit Correctional Facility. Speaking to girls that are just barely younger than me was certainly an experience. Just remembering even a couple years ago how I was in high school how I was when someone came to talk...I was so thrilled to have great feedback from the girls and look forward to beginning the school tour shortly.
I was so happy to make it down to Final Friday in Wichita, KS on the 29th of August. Final Friday is when the art galleries in Wichita all open up for shows. Due to the busy schedule of the past six months I have not been down there for a while but was so glad to be there once again. I am guessing I will not be down there for a few more months now. In just a couple weeks, I will be headed off to L.A. for the taping of the reality show. Farewell Kansas for a little while. Wow, time really is passing quickly.
Well, due to a busy schedule and a need to stay on top of things, I am back to work.
In peace
