My Goals

This last month has been crazy, to say the least. From finishing the school tour and appearances to preparing for the Miss Kansas Pageant 2009, I have been busy everyday sun up to sun down. Two weeks from yesterday, a new Miss Kansas will be crowned and handed a very big job.

Just in case you are wondering, MY FUTURE GOALS:

Move in with my little (6'5" buff) brother in June

Go back to school in July at Wichita State University (as a Jazz Studies major)

Run a half marathon in August

Graduate from WSU May 2011

Move to California to pursue a Masters in Film Scoring or if music does not look like it is going my way, begin studying Psychology

Become a rockstar in four years--my definition of rockstar is simply to make a decent living by going on tour!

Now, life has this funny way of throwing curve balls, so this is just a rough road map. WISH ME LUCK, and don't worry, my family has the luck of the irish!

SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS!!!!!

I am sitting in this adorable cafe in Atchison, KS called Marigold's Bakery & Cafe. I think one of the coolest things about being Miss Kansas is all of the great little local places in Kansas towns that you get to experience. I enjoy supporting locally owned businesses, so I always try and make it a point to research some of the cool spots before heading to a town. It never disappoints!

These past couple of weeks have just been crazy!!! I will hit a few of the highlights:

On April 15 I was in Pratt to visit and take pictures with sponsors, as well as speak at the Pratt Rotary lunch. I always love spending time at Rotary--each member is so welcoming.

The very next week, I was all over the map! I drove the Dodge City for night on Monday so that I could get up and speak at Cimarron in the morning. After that, I headed to Pratt for the evening. I was the entertainment for the Farmers Coop Equity Co. Annual Metting. The very next day, Wednesday, I was on my way to Leavenworth to speak to Muncie Elementary.

Last Thursday, I spent the entire day in Ark City, starting with the Chamber Coffee down at a cafe called Bricks. I spoke about my experiences as Miss Kansas and performed. From there, I had a little bit of free time, so I roamed the streets of Ark City...kind of. I just really enjoyed downtown. It was a beautiful day, so I spent lunch time going in and out of the local book shops and antique shops, stopping to eat at Graves. In the afternoon, I performed at a retirement home and then mingled with the residents. Then in the evening, I emceed the Mr. Cinderfella Pageant at Cowley--now this was hilarious! The guys were so great, I think that this will probably be the funniest experience of my entire year!!! For picture, you can go to: misskansas2008.blogspot.com <---a little plug for my mother :)

The very next day, I spent in Hutchinson. I started the day performing for a rest home and mingling with the residents there. I had just about an hour and a half of free time, so from there, I found another coffee shop to read in. From there I went to talk to and take pictures with the kids at Girls & Boys Club. We had a great time! In the evening, I participated as a judge in the Miss and Ms. Salt Queen Pageants. They were held in the Underground Vault and Storage Facility--The Underground Salt Mine--650 feet below the surface and 1.7 million feet big. It was amazing! I loved being down there.

By the way, I am reading Miles Davis' Autobiography. It is great, but if you are under 18, it is probably not for you.

Spring--where's the warm weather?

Oh my how time flies! I have certainly been busy for the last month.

Since the last time I posted, I have filmed two commercials--one for Spangles and one for Carlos O'Kelly's. Now, I must say that I can act about as well as I can dance, and at this point, that is not too great. While I may someday take dance lessons, acting is probably not the thing for me. I tell you this because all of the sudden everyone thinks I am looking at going to Hollywood. Well, sorry to disappoint but the only way I plan to go there is if I have some music lined up. :)

There is one thing I have found I can actually pull off pretty well, and that is emceeing. This is because I am secretly incredibly cheesy! I have had plenty of practice over the last month, emceeing the last four multi-title pageants for Miss Kansas 2009, which I might add is just around the corner!

I was very impressed on St. Patty's Day by the parade in Lawrence. It was huge and very well organized. There were more than 100 floats and 1000s of people. This has got to be the largest parade in Kansas! The float that was beside mine while we were waiting to start was a group of people dressed as zombies, dancing to Thriller with dry ice creating smoke on the float. THAT IS COOL PEOPLE!

March 21 and 22 we had the Miss Kansas Reality Weekend. This weekend was a success. We engaged the girls in a variety of activities. The lovely Alyssa George, Miss Kansas 2007, and Daryl Woods, life coach and founder of fearlessly me!, were able to attend and be a vital part of the weekend. We had round tables in which the girls discussed current events among themselves, mock interviews in which they were tested on where they stood on those current events and even some group discussion as a whole group. We wrapped up the weekend with an activity to help benefit the Children's Miracle Network. We split the girls up into groups and sent them into the community of Pratt to collect coins for kids to benefit CMN. The girls did a great job!

Speaking of CMN, I was so excited to be a part of the CMN Radiothon in Great Bend with DJ Andie Price. It was so wonderful to meet the children and families who benefit from this organization everyday and see first hand what a difference even $15 a month can make.

Soon after returning from Great Bend I was snowed in from a couple appearances due to our unpredictable Kansas weather. It was nice to have a little break in there, but it was also a little sad because I was excited to speak at the KU March to College Day. Like my mom always says, though, better safe than sorry.

Last week I was in Dodge City for a couple days to speak at the high school, Youthville and Ness City before making my way back East for a quick rehearsal with WSU's Jazz Arts I for an upcoming concert. The concert is Thursday, April 16 at 7:30 pm. Come check it out!

Anyway, I will be heading to another rehearsal for the Jazz Fest concert now. To keep up with me, you can also visit: www.misskansas2008.blogspot.com. My mother does a wonderful job of updating it with photos of my recent appearances. I should have mentioned this a long time ago 

Confidence, Communication and Character

Oh my goodness, shame on me! I know it has been about a month since I last posted. I was hoping to not do that! Anyway, at least I am back. :)

I have been running all across the state, speaking and performing at different events, concerts, schools, festivals, etc. I could tell you in detail everything that I have done since my last post, but I think that instead I would like to tell you about a few things I have learned throughout my year as Miss Kansas.

Now before I tell you these things, I want to let you know that sometimes I can be cheesy.

This is one of those times.

Last fall during our retreat, we talked about three important things: Confidence, Communication and Likeable. Well, through the past few months I have revised that to be: Confidence, Communication and Character. These three things are the main areas that I have developed since winning Miss Kansas last summer.

A few examples:

Confidence

Before Miss Kansas, I was too afraid to play my music for anyone. Today, I performed an original piece in front of 500 6-12 grade students. At almost any given time, you can ask me to perform now, and I have no fear. (Well, there is always a level of healthy nerves.)

Communication

I have spoken to most age groups from Kindergarten to the elderly and have found a way to speak on each level. My first major speech to adults will be next month in Wichita to a group of sober houses. This will be an incredible experience. I am looking forward to it more than fearing it.

Character

I have always cared about others, but there is something about being young that makes you a just a little self-centered, if not a lot. This year I have spent so much time making sure I don't mess up and I look good and I say the right things. Then one day it dawned on me that it was about the people I was talking to and performing for. It was not about how I did or I felt. It was about how they felt and what they heard. This will following for the rest of my life, whether it is in music or anything else.

Now, I challenge each of you to work on these things. They are all tools for success.

In peace and love

Home Sweet Home

Well Kansas, I am back!!!

I know it has been a long time since I have written, but I have not forgotten about all of you out there!

Miss America was incredible! I went and rocked the stage and am now back to rock Kansas--that's for sure. I had a great time with my friends I made from the reality show—I want to give a special shout out to Miss Wyoming. She brought me a saddlebag! Seriously, if you know me, this is the perfect gift. I also want to say I was seen flashing the peace sign on television—since then, I have been given many peace sign gifts.

I want to tell you the most important thing I experienced at Miss America. I remember when I was preparing to head off to college. I decided not to try out for any piano scholarships, which is absurd because that is my primary instrument. I also never tried out for jazz band. I was afraid of not only failing but not getting the first position, so I did not even try. The minute after my name was not called for the top fifteen, I knew that I had no regrets. I was able to learn that you can do your very best, not get number one and still be content. Next year, I will go back to school, try out for the jazz band and everything else I was afraid to do before.

Here is just a quick overview of what I have done since returning from Miss America:

Just a couple days after returning from Vegas, I spoke and performed at a convention in Wichita for the United School Administrators of Kansas. This was a great time to see the principals from schools I had already spoken at and make new contacts.

The next appearance I made was to the Stafford elementary and middle school. (I met their principal the night before at the USA conference) This was great because I was able to speak to everyone about my platform and then perform a little longer for their after-school group. School districts like Stafford are so convenient because the elementary school, middle school and high school are all under the same roof. It was the same way in Cheney Lake.

From Stafford I drove to Pratt to try and catch a few sponsors before emceeing the multi-title pageants. Despite some technical issues, everything ran smoothly, and we crowned four lovely women! On Saturday evening, I attended the Pratt Community College basketball game where I helped crown the homecoming king and queen and sang the National Anthem. GO BEAVERS! Now, their gym is named the Beaver Dome, but I am hoping during Miss Kansas 2009 week we can rename it the Deaver Dome. This would be sweet!

Last night, I spoke and performed in Newton at a banquet to honor donors for Kidron Bethel Retirement Services. The theme of the evening was compassion. This was ideal because I hold compassion to be one of my core values so it was easy to pick up on the theme and tie it in to my speech.

I am so glad to finally mention core values. I think I have been able to define five core values of my own, for now this is. My core values are: compassion, wisdom, honesty, peace and love. Now that I have told you my core values, I challenge you to give this some thought and see what you come up with. From there, work toward them each day to make each one more prevalent in your life.

In Peace

Vegas Here I Come!

I am so excited to leave in just 2 days! I have had so much support from countless people, both in Kansas and many other states. I know that no matter the outcome, I am proud of my accomplishments here in Kansas.

My send off party was this past Saturday with a performance and silent auction, hosted by Kerry Buskirk. It was a great time to see much of my family, friends and supporters one last time before I leave, and did I mention it was standing room only? I was so glad to have so many people come out! Thank you!

Miss America is on January 24 on TLC live. The reality show, Miss America: Countdown to the Crown, has been airing on Friday evenings at 9pm Central Time, also on TLC. I must say I have enjoyed them so far. There are two more left, so don't miss them!

I now feel very centered and ready to go. This is great because we can so easily get caught up in all of the rushing around and getting ready that we lose sight of what is happening right now. I think this is the most important part of this year, remembering to stay focused. Every now and then we need a little reminder of that. What I have started doing is reading, listening to music and of course, communicating with those closest to me. (Special thanks to Lisa and Daryl) As long as I can keep this in sight, I will be golden!

Well Kansas, I am so glad to have served here for these past six months and want to thank everyone for their love and support. I will either be rockin' the nation in two weeks or rockin' Kansas. Either way, I will be rockin'!

Peace and Love

I AM ALIVE!

This has been such a great day, and it is days just like today that I really want to tell you about.

Today, I woke up and said to myself, "I have confidence." Now, I used to think this kind of stuff was a little cheesy, but then I experienced it. I made some breakfast, got ready to go and went to my morning appearance at Robinson Elementary. I was able to be in the moment for the entire presentation--speech and song--and really soak up what was going on. The kids were great, as always, and I definitely enjoy speaking at each event, but today, I was able to really engage and focus myself much more than normal. Then, I went to work on Miss America prep, finishing up Christmas cards, visiting a potential sponsor and working out, etc. The point is, this entire day I just keep remembering I AM ALIVE! I know this may sound silly, but I think that sometimes we forget that we are alive. It is just amazing to take life in.

I was reading in the news today about how in the year 2036 there is a possibility that a meteor could hit the earth. It is so painful to see in the news that people are hurting each other, that people do not have enough food or water, that in our great nation there are so many without homes. We need to look beyond the earth and definitely beyond ourselves. We are alive and there is so much more out in space to experience! Man has walked on the moon--this is big! We have lived in space! Instead of fighting among each other and being too stuffy to give a little extra time or money somewhere where it is needed, we should be working together to help each other and to help our world.

It seems as though we get so caught up in how fast life moves these days, and we forget that we only have the present moment. I am so guilty of this everyday, but the more I live, the more I am able to experience the "in the moment" times. I found this quote by one of my favorite authors, Thick Nhat Hanh, today and it just suits this blog: "Life can be found only in the present moment. The past is gone, the future is not yet here, and if we do not go back to ourselves in the present moment, we cannot be in touch with life."

This year has been more successful than I ever thought it would be, and it is only half way over! I am so thankful for all the support and love I receive daily from so many different people. As Miss America approaches, I am so excited to reconnect with the other titleholders, see the Miss America staff, experience Las Vegas and especially perform, interview, walk the Miss America stage!

Have safe travels if you are travelling over the holidays--I know I will be travelling--and don't forget to enjoy the moments you have with your loved ones. Remember, "Life can be found only in the present moment."

In Peace

Shadowboxing

That's right...shadowboxing. I seem to get bored in the gym fairly easily, so when I found out my trainer trains fighters, martial arts and kickboxing were a must do for me! I did my first routine yesterday and today I am struggling to move. It is great, though, because in order to grow, you have to have some pain.

It has been just over two weeks since I last posted a note. Since my last post, I have certainly been busy. I was able to speak to my first college age group on November 20 at Kansas Wesleyan University. The group that brought me in was the Psychology Club, and afterward I discussed with several of the staff and students of a possible double major--music and therapy. Many of the students that came were studying either nursing or some kind of addiction therapy. It was great to speak with my peers about such a prevelant topic as m platform.

November 21 I made my way to Pratt to visit more of the sponsors. I always love speaking with the people of Pratt. The very next morning, I spoke to the contestants and directors for Miss Kansas 2009. This was great! I was able to express to everyone what the Miss Kansas and America Organization mean to me. If you were to ask me what I have learned, I do not even know where to start! This has not been an easy year, but if it was, then I would be wasting my time. The beauty about this program is that not only have I grown tremendously as an individual but so has everyone that is involved--no matter how much. There was a time in my life when I did not want to belong to any groups or clubs, but now, I am so proud to be a part of the Miss Kansas "K" Club. I love everyone that has helped me along my way, not only as Miss Kansas but as Emily Deaver, and that is what life is about! So, later that afternoon I performed at the Old Fashioned Christmas in Pratt, took pictures with Santa and signed autographs. I then had to rush back to Wichita for an art auction for the Peace and Social Justice Center in Wichita. This was something that I was thrilled to do because the money raised is going to educate students about the environment.

Sunday, I woke up exhausted!

Monday, November 24, I spoke to another group of college students at Wichita State University. I was attending Wichita State University for 2 years until I won Miss Kansas, so it was great to be back! The class I spoke to was a communications class who's final project (25% of their grade) is about me. CRAZY! This was great because while I was there to be interviewed by the class, I am sure there were some who could benefit from my message. Since Monday, my friends, family and I have received follow-up interviews and questions. This must be a big project...

Tuesday, I met with one of my many life coaches. I do not know if I can even count on one hand how many people I think act as life coaches to me. (I must also include that some think of me as a life coach). I do want to say, however, that I feel it is very important to have someone to talk to. Someone that you can be completely open and honest with. Someone you can share your goals with me. I have found that I am always afraid of setting goals because i am fearful of not reaching them. One of my close friends then told me that you fail when you do not try. I know we hear this all the time when we are young, but for some reason, it does not set in until most of us are older. For me, this struck home two weekends ago. From now on, my life will be drastically different.

Wednesday and Thursday I was able to spend with my family. I travelled to Manhattan with my parents, little brother and grandma to celebrate Thanksgiving with the rest of my brothers. This already sounds confusing...I have three brothers. On lives in Wichita, Manhattan and Kansas City. Two are married. The one that lives in Manhattan has a pregnant wife. She is due any day now, hence the reason we travelled to them for Thanksgiving. This was a great time to be with family, for we never know what may happen in the next couple of months....

Black Friday--I did not even attempt to shop! Instead, I participated in a publicity event for celebrities in Wichita to raise awareness for the upcoming Jingle Bell Run/Walk that will be taking place on Saturday. I would participate in this and my family would as well, except that I have an apperance at Emporia. I was happy, though, to at least be involved on one of the days.

I better get to the gym--can't forget my shadowboxing steps!

In Peace

Emily

Busy Busy

Last week was a BUSY week! November 4, I was invited to perform at Garden City High School. A senior there, Lauren Deaver (who I found out later is my distant cousin) was completing a senior project by raising money for scholarships. It was a great evening. Garden City is a 6A school and I had no idea. Many of my classmates from Wichita State come from Garden City. Their jazz band, symphony orchestra and show choir also performed. Each group was incredible! After the concert was over, I found out that many of the students had been at the Wichita State Jazz Festival this past spring when I conducted my original composition. It was great to hear what they thought about it--even that they remembered me!

November 5, I appeared at Maize Elementary, the second largest elementary school in Kansas. The kids were great. They had some 700 kids total. Luckily, they broke them up and I gave two separate presentations.

Last Saturday, I was honored to participate in the Veteran's Day Parade in Wichita. At the end of the parade, I knew I was going to speak just a moment to the Gold Star Mom's; however, I did not realize I was going to be speaking directly after the Mayor of Wichita. Nonetheless, it turned out fantastic!

Last Sunday, Youth Horizons had a fundraising gala at St. Vincent de Paul. The area that the gala was in was beautiful. I am not entirely too sure what it is called, but I felt like I was in another country during a different era. There was so much talent in one evening!

Monday and Tuesday I spent in Pratt visiting sponsors and ending my trip with a discussion of current events with several highly involved community members from Pratt.

Thursday and Friday I was in Topeka. On Thursday I spent all day at Aldersgate assisted living home. I gave 5 different presentations, as it is a huge facility and felt well received. The elderly really love jazz, so I love doing these events! They usually know some of the songs I am doing and are still getting to experience a little more modern music too. Friday, I joined the Kansas Family Partnership to receive a proclamation for Red Ribbon Week. I was able to meet Governor Sebelius, which I have been wanting to do for a long time! From there, I went to McCrites assisted living home and did some more entertaining. They also new many of the songs I sang, so it was a blast!

Saturday I was the MC, along with Jennifer Jones (Miss Butler County 2008 ), for the Miss Augusta/Butler County Pageant. This was my first experience in being an MC, but I had a great time! From the feel of the crowd and all of the participants too, I think it was an all around successful evening. Jennifer crowned Danielle Coffman the new Miss Butler County 2009 and I crowned Lauren Werhan the new Miss Augusta 2009. It was a great evening. I really felt like each girl that participated did a wonderful job and was glad to have so many new girls competing. It kind of took me back to the first local I ever competed in when I was a senior in high school trying to find myself. What a great opportunity. I hope each of them continues to be involved in our organization.

Sunday I attended the Kansas Association of Counties at Century II with Berry Tractor & Equipment. I had a great time taking pictures with many of the influential leaders across the state of Kansas, as well as signing autographs. Berry Tractor & Equipment is located here in Wichita, and they even had a big yellow tractor inside the convention hall!

Well, my week is starting to pick up again, so I will write again soon!

In Peace

Emily

Red Ribbon Week

Wow, what a busy week!

On Monday, I gave three speeches to three different elementary schools: Oil Hill, Benton and Towanda (Where our very own Miss Kansas 2006, Michelle Loss is from). What was so cool was that Michelle even showed up! I must say it is great to have the support from all of the previous Miss Ks that I have been able to keep in contact with. On top of that, the kids were incredible!!! All of the tricks I had up my sleeve worked. I would love to write all about some of the things we did, but I definitely do not want to give it away, just in case any of you reading this happen to be at one of my presentations.

On Tuesday, I drove up to Topeka to meet with the United School Administrators of Kansas. I was also able to pick up material to hand out to kids in schools at the Kansas Family Partnership. Then, I was lucky enough to grab dinner with a friend and his wife from the Kansas Advisory Group. From there, I made my way to Kansas City to stay with my older brother, his wife, Jade (their dog) and Kitty (their cat).

I love my trips to KC because I get to stay with my brother and his dog. The thing you do not know is that their dog Jade was originally my dog. I used to work at a dog kennel and at the time had a white lab named Dolly. A different dog at work had too many puppies than she could take care of, and my dog miscarried her dogs but still had milk. We took a few of the dogs from the dog at the kennel and put them on my dog, Dolly. One of those puppies grew up to be Jade, a red labradoodle. Jade is quite possibly one of the coolest dogs ever! Of course I think this because I raised her, so she is just the perfect dog for me. Sadly, when I went to college, my parents gave Jade to my brother to take care of her, but at least she is still in the family!

Today, I went to Cheney Grade School, Middle School and High School. I gave five presentations at the middle school and one each at the grade school and the high school. It was such a full day. It was very cool to be in Cheney (and Towanda I should say) because they are celebrating Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week ties directly into my platform because it deals with not doing drugs. I was given a red ribbon by a couple of the high school students at Cheney and wore it the rest of the day. Giving that many talks in a day was scary at first, but it went by much faster than I thought it would have. Now I know that I can do it!

Tomorrow is Halloween!!!!! I absolutely love Halloween! I think I have dressed up almost every year as a pirate for some time now. This year, however, I will be dressing up with a group of friends as an emo band--at least I hope everyone else dresses up too. We all have short, dark hair, so it is just perfect!

I have been told my many different sources that people like it when I put music I listen to on here. Right now, I am listening to Explosions in the Sky. This is a completely instrumental band. If you want to give this band a try, you have to listen to the songs the entire way through and you have to listen to more than one. This is the kind of music that either you like it or you don't. Hope you are able to check it out. A great way to test if you like Explosions in the Sky is to listen to them on www.pandora.com.

All right. I think I will head to bed early tonight!!!

In Peace

Emily

Hello Kansas, I have missed you

I am back.

Of course I have been back for about a week now, but due to some jet lag, I have had to catch up to real time here in Kansas.

I had a wonderful time in Cali with the other 51 Miss America Contestants. I really had some great experiences on both our days taping and our days off and look forward to how the show turns out in January.

Now, it is back to business. Last Sunday, I had an appearance down in Old Town for Lucinda's clothing store, and let me tell you, I love their clothes! To my surprise, there was even a small jazz combo--which, if you know me, this is my forte. It was a really great!

Later in the week, I continued with the Miss America Prep. I must say, every time I go into working on the interview part, I feel incredibly terrified. The good thing, though, is that that terrified feeling is slowly leaving and beginning to turn into excitement and curiosity.

Next week, I look forward to going to the Circle and Cheney school districts to talk to the students.

Even though it is Sunday, some squats and push ups wouldn't hurt a thing! icon_lol

Leaving for L.A.

What a beautiful day! I was able to go on a bike ride this morning, and it is perfect outside. There is sunshine, fairly clear skies, a little bit of wind, and everything is still green. It is always nice to try and get a little bit of time outdoors, whether it be running, biking, swimming, anything. The last month has required a lot of time researching, making phone calls, typing emails--basically indoors.

In the past couple of weeks I have been doing several things: preparing for the school tour that is kicking once I return from the reality show, practicing the different phases of competition for the Miss America Competition in January, keeping up with old and finding new sponsors, writing notes and letters and getting everything put in place for the reality show taping. Believe it or not, I leave on Sunday to head out to L.A. to tape the reality show.

Last night I began packing for Los Angeles. I will be away from Kansas until early October! Even though we have not been given many details, I know everyday is going to be great. I will miss everyone back here in Kansas, but it is always good to get out of your comfort-zone and try new things. The last time I was in California was when I was a freshman in high school. I was in San Fransisco, so I must say, I am thrilled to get the chance to be in L.A. this time around.

Tour of the Juvenile Justice system

Our weather has certainly been crazy. You know, it kind of feels like we are in the mountains right now. In the morning it is chilly jacket weather and by afternoon, it is too warm for a jacket. With fall literally just around the corner, I will tell you I just cannot wait for Halloween--one of my favorite holidays! I dress up almost every year! We will see where this Halloween takes me; maybe I will end up on the spooky train ride in Pratt, Kansas.

I have had some really great feedback about music and books I have talked about on here, so I figured I would give out another name of an album/musician that I enjoy listening to...Billie Holiday. I know that everyone knows this name; however, there is an album called Lady in Satin that is just phenomenal. Billie recorded this album in 1958 and she passed away in 1959. This album has some of the most amazing vocals I have ever heard. The true beauty is that her voice is so raw. Her voice does not sound like it once did when she was younger. She instead sounds like she has gone through life and can now truly express what she feels. She sounds as she is.

Okay…I cannot resist but to give you one more album and movie to check out. The reason for this is that I have been listening to the soundtrack as I write this and I think people just really need to know about this music. The name of the movie is Amelie. Both the soundtrack and the movie are great! It is French music; and consequently, it is a French movie. Enjoy!

The real work of Miss Kansas has really started to come to life—even though it did start the night I was crowned with the press conference and the banquet the next morning. In the past month I have toured our Juvenile Justice system in Kansas, visiting two Juvenile Correctional Facilities, three Juvenile Detention Centers and seven courthouses. The development and understanding that I have done with my platform in just this month has been incredible. I have been places I never thought I would be able to go, along with meet people I would have never thought I would have the chance to meet. A couple of the highlights from the past month would have to be speaking to the Kansas Advisory Group and the girls in the Beloit Correctional Facility. Speaking to girls that are just barely younger than me was certainly an experience. Just remembering even a couple years ago how I was in high school how I was when someone came to talk...I was so thrilled to have great feedback from the girls and look forward to beginning the school tour shortly.

I was so happy to make it down to Final Friday in Wichita, KS on the 29th of August. Final Friday is when the art galleries in Wichita all open up for shows. Due to the busy schedule of the past six months I have not been down there for a while but was so glad to be there once again. I am guessing I will not be down there for a few more months now. In just a couple weeks, I will be headed off to L.A. for the taping of the reality show. Farewell Kansas for a little while. Wow, time really is passing quickly.

Well, due to a busy schedule and a need to stay on top of things, I am back to work.

In peace

Emily

7-Word Thoughts

I read an article in TIME magazine about 4-word film reviews, 5-word theatre reviews, 6-word memoirs, and 12-word novels. I think I will summarize the events of this past week in 7-word thoughts.

My muscles more sore than ever thought.

I am reading much about presidential candidates.

Getting ready to give speeches to kids.

All About Orlando

I know, I know. As soon as an article is written about my blog, I quit using it. I feel terrible.

Due to being out of town for a week in Orlando, many days of traveling for platform development and appearances here and there, getting to the blog is difficult; however, it is no excuse!

Let's get to the chase now. Orlando was incredible! I had never been there before, and the Miss America Organization had really awesome activities planned for the contestants--48 were present.

Thursday we all went to Disney World, starting with some publicity activities and then getting to tour and ride the rides. My favorite thing, by far, was Space Mountain! Space Mountain is a ride that is very fast with quick turns and drops, all the while it is pitch black. The first time we rode Space Mountain, let's just say that my stomach felt a little crazy, but of course, I could not resist to go again. The second time was a little smoother--I did not cover my head the entire time. icon_lol After Disney World, we all went to eat at an amazing Italian place, Maggiano's. What is there not to love about great pasta! To end the evening, we went to the Miss America's Outstanding Teen Pageant, where our very own Alasyn Zimmerman, Miss Kansas Outstanding Teen, competed. For me, never having watched many pageants, this was a good experience to grasp everything a little better. Besides, Alasyn did great!

Friday we went to Sea World. With out a doubt, my favorite thing here was SHAMU! I have never seen a whale in person, and definitely not doing tricks. Shamu was SO BIG!!! Luckily, my group did not sit in the soak zone, but I know some of the contestants did. The whale splashed everyone down there with his fins. Sea Wolrd also had two roller coasters as well. I was able to go on both a couple times. The big, fast roller coaster terrified me the first time, so I kept my eyes closed. The second (just like space mountain) was amazing! I just said to myself, I am going to enjoy this. After we were done at Sea World we went to a party--The Sock Hop. Everyone dressed from the fifties--I was a Pink Lady, of course. At the sock hop there was dancing, eating, games, etc. This was just a nice way for the girls--Teens--competing to relax before final night.

Saturday was the day we were able to sleep in. We did not have a meeting until two. After the meeting, we got more free time until the final competition. The final evening of the pageant was unlike any pageant I had ever seen--judging by the fact that I have only watched one local, I am sure you can understand why. Oh, and let's not forget watching Miss America once as a little girl. I must say, though, I really love life after the pageant--the preparation, the appearances, the people, the self discovery--but please do not get me wrong, I secretly love the evening gown competition and of course the talent competition. Hopefully by Miss America, I will love the swimsuit competition and interview as well--:) As long as I do what I am supposed to do, it will all be fantastic. Anyway, after the competition there was a celebration party for Taylor Hanna Fitch, the new Miss America's Outstanding Teen. I was able to get two hours of sleep before catching my plane back to Kansas.

I am now back in Kansas, doing what I do. I have some really great events coming up and cannot wait to tape the reality show in September.

Now, the day begins. icon_lol

Peace

Going Going Going

I can't believe that it is almost time to go to Orlando already! Getting to meet everyone before the reality show taping will be great.

I have still been going going going. Even up to the day that we leave for Orlando, I will be going. The hardest thing about being Miss Kansas has to be having so much to do and so little time. That is better, though, than not having enough to do. There are really two jobs that you do at once, and even the the board keeps telling me this, I finally figured it out myself. Not only am I getting a chance to do things here in Kansas (meet people, speak to people, entertain people, etc.), but I am also preparing to go to Miss America, which is a whole different ball game. Time is just passing by so fast. Trying to figure out how to slow it down seems to be getting harder and harder each day.

Do not worry! I am still, kind of, finding time to relax and have a social life. Last night, I was lucky enough to celebrate my birthday a little early, seeing as I will be out of town for my birthday. The opening night of the Olympics was on, so for my party, we ate pizza and watched that. It had to be the most amazing thing I have ever seen! I heard there were 20,000 individuals performing the entire thing. My good friend, Maria, who teaches in China was over last night and said that some of her students were in the performance. That would be so cool to be part of such a masterpiece! Watching it really gave me a sense of peace. To see that so many people join together to create beauty! I can just say, "Wow!"

it is all coming together

A week has past already?!? Wow, time does fly!

I have been busy, busy, busy finishing up paperwork for the Miss America Organization. I love when that part is over and it is just around the corner. Before we know it all the contestants for Miss America will be meeting eachother in Orlando. I simply cannot wait!

Early this week I had the opportunity to make an appearance at National Night Out here in Augusta, KS. This was mostly a kid event with an air-jump, wading pools, a clown, Miss Kansas(that is me!), the CERT team from Butler County, the Firefighters from Augusta, the police and the police dog, and PIZZA!!! The kids I was able to meet were really awesome. I even had the chance to really sit and talk with a couple--one of my favorite things to do is have one-on-one talks with individuals. By the end of the evening, I had eaten way too much pizza, played kickball, sprayed the firehose and taken a million pictures. What could be a better way to end a Monday?

Since then, I have been hard at work, as said earlier, on my paperwork. In between that, working out, keeping contacts, trying to stay up late and get up early (we know this will come into play for the reality show), and I could just keep going.

I am getting more and more excited about school presentations the closer they come. At first, I was a little scared of this, but everything is coming together so perfectly! I just love when things just work out and if you let them, I think they really will.

Even though every week is passing by so quickly, I am surprised to see evevrything just flow. The first month and a half as Miss Kansas have not been easy, but they have been fun and rewarding. I know now that only great things are in the future and look forward to the many more people I will have the opportunity to meet and the experiences I will have.

Soaring through the weeks!

On the Road Again

Early Friday morning I flew out of Wichita to go to Nashville for some preparation for Miss America. As soon as I touched the ground, Daryl had me in heels practicing my soon-to-be model walk. It is kind of funny how hard it can be to walk gracefully--especially when your feet are sore.

After a couple intense hours of techno beats and dance mirrors, Daryl and I did a little local shopping in some of the hip stores in Nashville. This was a great afternoon because I was really able to express my personal sense of fashion and with a little help, develop it into something very workable. If you do not feel comfortable in it, do not wear it!

Saturday morning we woke up and headed straight to the photoshoot, starting out with make-up and hair. I have quite a bit of practicing to do before I will be able to perfect the art of "eye painting." icon_lol Most of the day was taken up with make-up, hairspray, jewelry, clothes and a flashing camera. In the evening we watched reality television. I do not take much time to watch these on my own; however, it will be important in the near future to know how some of that works in portraying individuals. Oh, and I cannot forget to let everyone out there know that I fell asleep at the dinner table--as long as this does no happen at Miss America I think I will be all right.

Sunday morning began with a mock interview. To be honest, the interview process is a bit nerve racking for me. The photos and hanging out with people who just want to do their art and create a beautfiul outcome is easy for me. The interview is what I find is more difficult than anything else. I was definitely pushed a bit to answer some difficult questions that, consequently, helped me reevaluate myself once again. I was able to take a wealth of knowledge on myself and how I come off to others this weekend. I think the key to this job is learning how to communicate to many different types of audiences and help everyone understand my message. We so often get caught up on all of the little surface level things and forget about how much is behind the scenes. Knowing now that I will make a difference this year during my reign as Miss Kansas is so exciting and helps to ease my fears of the "interview room." Even looking forward to years ahead, I have peace, knowing that I can do what I want as long as I really believe I can.

I started reading The Secret on my way to Nashville and funny thing is I completely and totally understand everything it is saying already, but reading really makes me accountable to putting my thoughts in check. If you have not read the book (and I have not read it completely yet), you should and you will then understand a bit of what i am saying. I am sure the next time I find some moments in my day to read I will write about it some more.

I left Sunday to come back to Wichita, but due to some flight issues, I was delayed in Dallas all night. This is the first time I have been stuck in a big city alone. Actually, it was the first time I had ever travelled on an airplane alone. After a crazy bus ride and a rough night sleep I made my way back to the airport Monday morning.

Finally arriving back in Wichita, KS, I had just enought time to prepare for my four hour drive to Phillipsburg, KS for the Phillips County Fair. Now, this was a quiant little county fair out in Western Kansas. The cool thing, though, is the fair board president set up the keyboard and talking area for me in their arena that was covered with wood chips. Now seriously, how many people get the chance to play some jazz tunes and walk in heels on top of wood chips?!? Pretty sweet, huh.

Well, I have been in meetings all day and have many more tomorrow, so I will be checking back in later to let you in on the details of my meetings.

Peace

Emily

Chocolate Cake

There are few who will really know what this title "Chocolate Cake" means, many who will think they know, and many more who do not read this blog.

For those of you who think you do, just ask, I would love to tell!

Last night I had the honor of attending Drums Across Kansas at Wichita State University--my school! It was a great night, getting the chance to hear some great drum corps. I am a fan of contemporary music, so some of the pieces played definitely hit me right at home. I then started to think about how much work it would take to compose and arrange a piece for drum corp and how rewarding it would then be to see it all come together. For every individual on the field working together to paint one big picture is just amazing.

At the end of the night, I also got the chance to help with handing out awards and, of course, taking pictures. There was an encore song, but before beginning the last song, the group is standing there posing very serious-you know how they do-and I prance on in between two of the snares to take a picture. What a fun time!

If you have not seen Drums Across Kansas, I suggest you show up next year! AMAZING!!!

Peace

a night at the perk

Last night was such a fantastic night in Wichita. I was able to pop in on a show at the Riverside Perk to find James Paul playing some great music. On top of the amazing music, there were so many great people in one spot all at the same time. I had a great chance to see some of the musicians I already know and meet some more that I did not know before, and let me tell you, there are some really great musicians in Wichita.

Reuniting with the people that helped me get everything together and rolling is a great reminder of how lucky I am to be where I am today.

I love you, everyone!

Jack and the Beanstock

Man I am slacking on these posts this week! Sorry everyone!!!

I have been in Kansas City for the past few days: shopping, looking at evening gowns, spending time with family and reading. That is right, reading. I had the wonderful chance to read the classic fairy tale Jack and the Beanstock at Freedom School. My brother, Abe, is a teacher at Freedom School during the summer, so I had a little foot in the door. A few of the kids and one of the teachers acted out the story as I read it.

Hanging out with kids makes me happy and helps me to remember the little things. These awesome kids at Freedom School were so excited about singing and dancing and hearing a story. Sometimes I really wish I still was a kid because life is so exciting and new. You do not have so many adult decisions and resposibilites. If only we could find a way to balance a reponsible attitude and a care free spirit, life would be so rewarding and enjoyable.

On that note, I am going to the gym-to be responsible of course.

Mutton Bustin'

I woke up bright and early today to drive to Great Bend for the Barton County Fair. The weather was kind of rough for a little while, lots of wind and rain, but it cleared up by the time I arrived at the fair grounds. The time at the fair was filled with kids riding sheep-mutton busting, BBQ contests, taking pictures, signing autographs, and a bit of singing.

One of the buildings had a fairy tale theme-each booth was a different fairy tale. I have not seen or heard of Jack and the Beanstock since my childhood. There was an amazing beanstock shooting up from one of the tables up to the ceiling, how cool!!!

Cloudy Days

There have been cloudy skies here in Kansas, at least where I am, for two days now. I think this may be why I fell alseep early last night. It is kind of funny how the weather can affect us so much. I must say, though, we do have some of the most amazing clouds in America!

I was just thinking today about how effective music can be when my father told me a story from the television show M.A.S.H. This show takes place during the Vietnam War and the Korean Conflict. In one of the episodes, there was a North Korean soldier in the military hospital that was getting very upset and scared. Hawkeye , the Chief surgeon, went over to the man and started to hum a lullaby, calming the man down. See, the man could not speak English and Hawkeye could not speak his language; however, a simple melody was able to get around the language barrier and give the man some peace.

I hope everyone can find peace in music, peace on a cloudy day and peace in themselves

Peace

Gobbledigook

After a busy day of working out, phone calls, research and debates, I am winding down with the new Sigur Ros album. The title of this post goes to the name of the first song on the album. If you do choose to go out and buy this album, do no expect to understand anything being sung. Nonetheless, go buy the album. Most of my relaxing and happy moments are found in time spent listening to Sigur Ros albums.

Be Happy!!!

Second Place at the Race

I hope everyone had a great Independence Day!

Last night, I was able to celebrate in my hometown, Augusta, leading the pledge of allegiance at a pre-fireworks ceremony. The fireworks in Augusta were beautiful, as usual!

This morning, my entire family woke up at five a.m. to go to the Chisholm Trail 5K walk, jog, run. The race did not start until about 7:30, but we had an hour to drive to get there. Crazy as it is, I won the second place medal in my age group (women 19-24)! What a great way to start a Saturday.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!
